This was a garden that I designed and installed in Brooklyn, NY a few years ago. Here is the story of how it developed in pictures:
My client had a lovely deck area (not pictured here) and wanted to be able to enjoy it while surrounded by lush foliage and flowers. The soil conditions were poor, filled with old rocks and infertile dirt. The fences were covered in an undesired vine and the back wall was an ugly shade of peach. We brought in clean soil, rich compost, other soil amendments, and slate for a new walkway.
The garden is freshly installed with hostas, Japanese maple, climbing hydrangea vine, asters, Iris, phlox, Epimedium, Echinacea, ferns, Liatris, ginger and other mostly shade loving plants.
The view from the deck.
In subsequent years, the plants filled in and this is now a healthy, thriving sanctuary! This garden is a great example of how much can be done with small spaces.
